چکیده

extant limpet. In addition, bivalves also acquired a novel structure, adducter muscle to close the separated shell plate. Because the two novel structures, the separated shell plate and the adducter muscle appear early embryonic stage, their evolution should be understood as a modification of early development. To understand the evolution of bivalve bodyplan, we have traced the cleavage pattern of the Japanese purple mussel, Septifer virgatus. We found that the stereotypic cleavage pattern of shell plate precursor cells were observed in this species, suggesting that the cleavage pattern itself is tightly regulated because it is essential for the development of bivalve bodyplan. We also observed the expression pattern of dpp homolog which is involved in shell formation in gastropod. In addition, we observed the development of novel cell population of adductor muscle by using some molecular markers.

Coe Genes Are Expressed in Differentiating Neurons in the Central Nervous System of Protostomes

Genes of the coe (collier/olfactory/early B-cell factor) family encode Helix-Loop-Helix transcription factors that are widely conserved in metazoans and involved in many developmental processes, neurogenesis in particular. Whereas their functions during vertebrate neural tube formation have been well documented, very little is known about their expression and role during central nervous system ...

Neurotrophin, p75, and Trk Signaling Module in the Developing Nervous System of the Marine Annelid Platynereis dumerilii

In vertebrates, neurotrophic signaling plays an important role in neuronal development, neural circuit formation, and neuronal plasticity, but its evolutionary origin remains obscure. We found and validated nucleotide sequences encoding putative neurotrophic ligands (neurotrophin, NT) and receptors (Trk and p75) in two annelids, Platynereis dumerilii (Errantia) and Capitella teleta (Sedentaria,...

TALENs Mediate Efficient and Heritable Mutation of Endogenous Genes in the Marine Annelid Platynereis dumerilii

Platynereis dumerilii is a marine polychaete and an established model system for studies of evolution and development. Platynereis is also a re-emerging model for studying the molecular basis of circalunar reproductive timing: a biological phenomenon observed in many marine species. While gene expression studies have provided new insight into patterns of gene regulation, a lack of reverse genet...

Molecular Architecture of Annelid Nerve Cord Supports Common Origin of Nervous System Centralization in Bilateria

To elucidate the evolutionary origin of nervous system centralization, we investigated the molecular architecture of the trunk nervous system in the annelid Platynereis dumerilii. Annelids belong to Bilateria, an evolutionary lineage of bilateral animals that also includes vertebrates and insects. Comparing nervous system development in annelids to that of other bilaterians could provide valuab...
